Life Jackets Save Lives - Wear It!

It is the law to have a life jacket for each passenger of any watercraft. This is strictly enforced and includes non-motorized watercraft such as paddleboards and kayaks. All children under the age of 13 must wear one.

During the recovery period after Hurricane Maria, the author ventured to San Juan, Puerto Rico to offer volunteer services. The enduring memories of the difficulties faced by the locals left a lasting impact on her. To fully immerse herself in the local experience, she traveled the city by foot, Dominican Piece' Corres, Uber, and stayed at a hostel. Even basic necessities like peanut butter sandwiches were expensive, and the city was filled with stranded volunteers. The top priority was to restore a stable power grid.

One of the major challenges faced was bringing telephone poles from mainland U.S. to the island of Puerto Rico. The problem was not just the time constraint, but also the shortage of telephone poles due to the over-crowded and under-staffed ports.

The use of 3D printed telephone poles in areas such as Puerto Rico and U.S. coastal regions is a feasible solution to the current challenges facing these areas. The current infrastructure of telephone poles in these regions is vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes, which can lead to widespread power outages and communication failures (National Renewable,Β  Energy Laboratory, 2021). The use of 3D printing technology can help to address these challenges by providing a more resilient and cost-effective solution.

One of the benefits of 3D printing is that it allows for the creation of customized designs that are specifically tailored to the needs of a particular location (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021). For example, telephone poles in coastal regions can be designed with stronger materials and built with an increased height to withstand the effects of storm surges (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021). Additionally, 3D printing enables the rapid production of telephone poles, which is crucial in disaster-prone areas where quick restoration of power and communication is essential (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021).

In addition to the benefits outlined above, 3D printed telephone poles are also more environmentally sustainable than traditional poles (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021). The process of 3D printing generates less waste than traditional manufacturing methods and can reduce the carbon footprint of the production process (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021).

In conclusion, the feasibility of 3D printed telephone poles in areas such as Puerto Rico and U.S. coastal regions is high (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021). The technology offers a more resilient and cost-effective solution to the challenges facing these areas, while also being environmentally sustainable (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021). As the technology continues to advance, it is likely that the use of 3D printed telephone poles will become increasingly widespread in disaster-prone areas around the world (National Renewable Energy Laboratory, 2021).
